Gas and Real Estate...What Can We Do?
by Sam Orlando
I was driving down the street the other day and was just thinking about the high price of gas and what the real estate industry and owners of property could do to help out in cutting down on our gas usage. With the price going up almost everyday, I think it is a good idea to consider ways we can cut our usage and dependance on oil. At first I will admit that I could not think of any correlation, but then it occurred to me that yes there are things that we all can do that can make a large difference.
I know a lot of people today do most of their work at a office from a computer. If you are someone that has this type of job, check to see if you could set up a home office and do your work from home. It would be so much more beneficial because for one you would eliminate the gas usage to and from work, you would eliminate the wasted time for travel, you would eliminate more expensive clothing for the office, possibly day care, and many times wasted time at the office talking at the "water cooler" : ). Check with your company and encourage them to consider making this available to its employees. If they do not have this available ask them to consider making this type of arrangement available. If enough companies would get behind this I believe it would go a long way in reducing our overall gas and oil demand.
Second, if working at home does not work for you and you live far away from your job, consider relocating closer to your job. With the cost of gas continuing to go up, it makes more and more sense to consider this. If you consider your time, tolls and gas expense, it may be something to consider. Make yourself a pro's and con's list include not just the cost of relocating and gas savings, but also your time savings. One thing in life that we can not buy for ourselves is more time...it is priceless so use it wisely.
If you work for a company that has multiple locations, and the location that you are at is far away from your home, check to see if you can relocate to the closer location to your home.
I have noticed recently that in the real estate industry, a majority of real estate agents have set up home offices and are able to do a lot of their work from their home office thus saving quit a bit on gas usage.
One thing that the real estate industry has made available to buyers, is the ability to do a lot of home shopping from the convenience of their home. The real estate industry via the internet has made shopping for a home so much more convenient and fun. With multiple photos and virtual tours, you can eliminate a lot of driving around for both the buyer and agent.
